Do you have a fantastic build, site, or event in Second Life?

If so, please enter it into "The Sleddies" competition by July 30, 2008 at midnight SLT! Submissions will be accepted into one of the six SLEDcc Strands (see below) and evaluated based on criteria appropriate for each strand. Submissions will be open for judging by members of the Second Life community who register to vote. (Note: Participants need not register to attend SLEDcc in Tampa to vote on submissions.)

Competition Rules

1. This contest is open to any "educationally-oriented" project on the Second Life platform. This means that the primary use or purpose of the build, site, tool, or event must be related to teaching and learning, or developed with the needs of educators in mind. Commercial projects are not entirely excluded, but are only eligible if they meet the "educationally-oriented" criteria as interpreted by the SLEDcc 2008 Co-Chairs. The purpose of "The Sleddies" is to reward and showcase the best educational projects on the grid.

2. Competition participants are responsible for securing/providing their own land and resources for builds. Existing content is eligible for entry, or contestants can develop something specifically for the competition. All entries are due by July 30th, 2008 at midnight SLT. No extensions will be granted to allow the voting process to be fair for all entries.

3. Submissions must be located on land that is open to the public and allows scripts to run.

4. Submissions will be assessed by the criteria provided for each Competition Category, and voted on by Second Life residents who register to vote. Only one vote per resident per entry will be allowed. (Voters may vote for multiple entries in the same category, but may only vote on each entry one time.)

5. Multiple contest entries are permitted by a single person or team, but each entry may only be submitted to one category. For example, if you have two projects you'd like to submit, you may submit both projects to the same category (Project 1 and Project 2 submitted to Blue strand, for example), but you may not submit one of the projects to multiple categories (Project 1 submitted to both the Blue and the Orange strands, for example).

6. The team lead for each submission will be responsible for placing the voting booth in an appropriate and easy to find location near the entry. This booth must be placed near the entry by July 29th at midnight SLT or the entry will be disqualified from the competition.

7. At the conclusion of the contest, the results of the popular vote will be verified by "The Sleddies" Independent Review Board to ensure that the winning entries satisfy the requirements for the category in which the entry was submitted.

Competition Categories

Entries may be submitted to only one of the following six strands - please choose the category most appropriate! You may want to review the criteria for each strand before selecting the category for your entry.

Red Strand: Gaming and Simulations Criteria

Orange Strand: Mixed Reality Learning Criteria

Yellow Strand: Theory, Research, and Practice Criteria

Green Strand: International, Diverse, and Special Populations Criteria

Blue Strand: Projects and Events Criteria

Purple Strand: Tools and Products Criteria

Submission Guidelines

Submissions must be registered through "The Sleddies" Contest Entry Form. The main team or project lead should complete this form. Following approval, the main contact will be sent a no mod/copy/trans voting booth for the appropriate category to be placed near the entry within Second Life. This booth must be placed near the entry by July 29th at midnight SLT or the entry will be disqualified from the competition. Any evidence of tampering or attempting to modify the voting booth will also disqualify that entry, and all other entries by that team and/or project lead.

Voting on Entries

Any Second Life resident is eligible to vote for their favorite entry in each category of "The Sleddies" Award Competition. Only one vote per entry per resident is permitted. It is outside the scope of the contest organizers' abilities to ensure that alts or multiple accounts are not used for voting, but we certainly hope that voters will abide by the rules.

To mitigate against this possibility, and to ensure that the entries winning the popular vote do in fact meet the established criteria for each category, "The Sleddies" Independent Review Board will verify the results of the contest before the final winners are announced.

Voting will end on August 23, 2008 at midnight SLT. Votes received after that date and time will not be used to determine the outcome of the contest.

Contest Results

Winners will be announced at a special ceremony at SLEDcc in Tampa and in Second Life, date and time to be determined. Contestants do not need to be present at the ceremony to receive their awards, but all who submit an entry are encouraged to attend either the Tampa or in-world event.

The winning entry for each category will receive a prize package (to be determined) and will be invited to submit a paper about their entry to be included in the SLEDcc 2008 Conference Proceedings.
